In 2010, UNESCO named Shanghai "the City of Design", Shanghai officially joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. In June 2013, Shanghai Promotion Center for City of Design (hereinafter referred to SPCCD) was guided by Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, Shanghai Community Administration and UNESCO "Creative City" (Shanghai) Promotion Office, officially set up operation.
SPCCD is dedicated to promoting the development of Shanghai as "the City of Design" and the development of creative design industry. Since establishment, SPCCD has well organized and united relevant units to actively explore and practice by carrying out various international events and activities, such as exhibition, international exchange, regional cooperation and integration of industry and education.
Shanghai Design Week hosted by SPCCD has been held for 7 consecutive years, including three main sections: home exhibition, forum & summit, and more than 100 outside events. Besides this, SPCCD co-hosted China (Shanghai) International Furniture Fair in 2018, with the total area was 400,000 square meters, more than 1,300 brand companies at home and abroad participated and 146,400 professional audiences attended. In addition, since 2016, SPCCD has held Creative 100 which aims to find and support local talents and new brands.
II. International Exchanges
In terms of international exchanges, SPCCD has promoted a lot of Shanghai design to go abroad and introduce overseas design to Shanghai. During these year's efforts, SPCCD has gradually established a cooperation network with internationally renowned cities. So far about 40 international conferences of various scales have been held, received more than 200 international visitors, and visited more than 20 network member cities. We have organized more than 100 brand companies, designers, and industry organizations to participate in famous international exhibitions.
SPCCD is awarded member units of the Sino-Italian Cultural Cooperation Mechanism by Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Sino-Italian Design Exchange Center has been established in Florence in 2012 with the support from Florence Municipal. The center has expanded cooperation with Italian cities, such as Milan and Venice, and established a platform for cultural and economic cooperation and exchanges between China and Italy.
III. Regional cooperation
In response to the needs of cities in the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta and other regions for economic transformation and improvement, SPCCD has launched pilot projects with cities such as Yiwu, Taizhou, Dongguan to introduce Shanghai design resources. We have established service platforms to carry out cooperation, such as urban design industrial planning, platform construction, large-scale event planning, and industrial park development, etc.
IV. Integration of Industry and Education
SPCCD together with Shanghai Jiaotong University, Tongji University and other institutions jointly set up a talent education and training center to provide training courses for government officals, industrial park managers, and practitioners in different fields such as industrial design, fashion, architecture, and media. More than 30 training courses have been held and more than 2,000 trainees have been trained. SPCCD has also organized Shanghai design universities to promote the integration of industry and education through exhibitions, school-enterprise matchmaking and other forms.
