In order to serve the national strategy of the integrated development of Yangtze River Delta, facilitate industrial transformation and upgrading, promote high-quality economic development in Yangtze River Delta, deepen the construction of Shanghai as City of Design and highland for international creative talents, the First Yangtze River Delta Creative Design Exhibition was successfully held in Shanghai. The theme of this exhibition is "THINKING•SCIENCE•DESIGN". It aims to promote the integration and development of technology, intelligence and market through creative design.

The First Yangtze River Delta Creative Design Exhibition was guided by Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and Yangtze River Delta Regional Cooperation Office; supported by Department of Industry and Information of Jiangsu Province, Department of Education of Jiangsu Province, Department of Economy and Information of Zhejiang Province, Department of Education of Zhejiang Province, Department of Economy and Information of Anhui Province, Department of Education of Anhui Province; hosted by Shanghai Promotional Center for City of Design (hereinafter referred to "SPCCD"), Shanghai Municipal Education Commission Science and Technology Development Center, Shanghai WISDOM BAY Culture and Art Center; curated by Design China. It is held on November 26 to 28, 2019 at Shanghai Wisdom Bay.

This exhibition brought together nearly 40 universities, 30 intelligent manufacturing enterprises and design institutions in the Yangtze River Delta. The exhibition divided into 2 parts, “Enterprise Innovation Achievements" and "University Creative Achievements", aiming to increase the connection between universities and enterprises in Yangtze River Delta, and promote the integration and development of cultural and scientific innovation. The exhibition covers an area of 5000 square meters and lasted for 3 days, showing the audience the design power of China.

Su Ping, deputy district director and member of Baoshan District Committee said, "In the new era, Baoshan District is striving to become an international cruise city, intelligent manufacturing city, and constantly looking for transformation and development. Creative design industry integrated with technology, manufacturing and brands, plays an important role in the economic transformation.”

Liu Ning, President of China Industrial Design Association said: "From 2010 to 2019, for 10 years, China Design has expanded and upgraded, and had great achievements and breakthroughs, but there is still a gap from the world's leading level."

He points out, "We need to improve the configuration and organization of the innovative elements of design industry. At the same time, we need to focus on improving the application of manufacturing industrial design, as well as the order and standards in this industry."

At the opening ceremony, Ruan Li, deputy director of Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, Su Ping, deputy district director and member of Baoshan District Committee, inaugurated the branch of "Yangtze River Delta Creative Design Industry and University Alliance". The establishment of this alliance will build a platform for design cooperation between enterprises and universities, promote the integration of industry and education across industries, and service for industry innovation.

In order to promote the high-quality industry development, this exhibition joined with many well-known enterprises and universities, focusing on hot spots such as industry, education, 5G, environmental protection, etc. 2019 Yangtze River Delta Design Driving Industry Forum, Design Education Development Forum, Green Packaging and Environmental Sustainability Forum has been organized and carried out.

Is there any opportunity in the automotive industry? Is design-driven still valuable? Shao Jingfeng, design director of SAIC Motor Corporation Limited, delivered a keynote speech entitled "Thinking on Automobile Design in the Era of Smart Electricity". He believes that automobiles are important pillar of the national economy. Design must help the brand and industry to grow up. First, international strategy is necessary, design need to go out, talents also need to have an international vision; second, the functions need to be broke through; third, we should focus on talent training, constantly looking for new blood for car design.

Yu Tao, president of Shanghai Polytechnic University, in his keynote speech, he hoped that the students of Shanghai Polytechnic University should first have a skill to survive, which called "professional ability" ; second they must have "professional credit" , which includes professional ethics, professional quality and professional spirit. Shanghai Polytechnic University has cultivated more than 130 model workers in history. There is a spirit among those model workers, which is professional loyalty.

Wang Kezhan, senior product director for HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD., said in his keynote speech, "5G is the fifth generation of mobile communications, and 5G does not equal to 4G+1G. Compared to 4G, 5G has a significant increase in download speed. Why 4G can only change life, but 5G can change society? The fundamental reason the three key capabilities that 5G have: 1. High download rate, 2. High reliability and low latency (mainly for car networking, telemedicine), 3. MIoT, such as smart home."

The Yangtze River Delta Design Education Development Forum discussed current and future development of design talents, discipline construction, design services, cross-border cooperation and in-depth integration of industry, education and research.

The forum was divided into two parts: keynote speech and round table discussion. Zhang Zhan, director of SPCCD, hosted the keynote speech.

Keynote Speech

Wu Xiang, professor of College of Fashion and Design of Donghua University said, the goal of talent training is to meet the demand for talents. The education mode that centered on teaching inhibits students' initiative. In fact, students are creative, and the focus on teaching limits the student's involvement in the thinking process. Wu Xiang believes that in the age of internet, the social needs, external conditions, technological basis and service mode are all changing, and so as design. Design is facing the changes of social forms. The task of design education becomes more complex, and to construct a new knowledge system and method system becomes important.

He Xiaoyou, professor and doctoral supervisor of Nanjing University of Arts, proposed that cultural environment and original environment is needed for the industrial design in China. Can education continue to lead the industry in the next 10 years? He Xiaoyou thinks that Chinese design needs to build social relations with global design, and cultivate design products with both Chinese culture and international perspectives.

Mao Xirong, vice president of Suzhou Arts and Design Technology Institute, mentioned in his keynote speech, “At present, the integration of industry and education has become an important mode of talent training in colleges. However, due to some practical reasons, the model still needs to be improved and modified, in order to enhance the comprehensive quality and professional abilities of students”.

Zhou Bin, dean of School of Design Art and Architecture, Zhejiang Wanli University, in his keynote speech, he said that creative design is affected by time. The form of cultural IP and the way of communication will keep changing with the development of culture, technological innovation and time. In the process of education, we should cultivate and establish independent creation, cultural innovation, practical experience, and constructivism learning theory.

Huang Kai, Secretary of the Party Committee and Professor of the College of Art of Anhui University of Engineering said, there are three basic models of university-industry cooperation:

1. Co-construction system: mainly relies on enterprises, universities, local governments or industry organizations to undertake national and provincial innovation projects, funded by local government organizations;

2. Contract system: funded by the enterprise;

3. Joint stock system：enterprise and university jointly establish a company, enterprise responsible or contacting the business, university provides strength and venue.

In addition, there are three types of innovation industry research models:

1. Enterprise projects enter the classroom;

2. Design creative workshops;

3. Collect through competitions;

Roundtable Forum

During the forum, a salon forum focusing on the development of design education was also held. The forum was hosted by Ye Ping, professor and doctoral tutor of Fudan University. Yu Wei, dean of school of Art Design And Media of East China University of Science and Technology, Lufeng, dean of School of Arts of Anhui Polytechnic University, Lin Xun, dean of School of Art and Design of Shanghai Institute of Technology, Peng Cainian, dean of School of Art and Design of Shanghai Business School, and Zhang Kai, Vice dean of Art School of Jiangsu University attended the forum. Representatives from well-known universities in Yangtze River Delta gathered here to discuss the development and future expectation of design education, from the aspect of the combination of production, education and research.

Professor Paolo Cardini, head of Industrial Design Department, Rhode Island School of Design, gave a keynote speech entitled “Why Design Must Be Critical” in the China 3D Printing Culture Museum in Wisdom Bay on the morning of Nov.27.

Professor Paolo Cardini explains the "critical thinking": how to think about design in a different way. He said, "Nowadays, design has become so important that many things need to change. It’s not just static aesthetic and fashion expression; design is highly relevant to life. We will not survive without it. Global products can be easily modified and changed because they are not very classic. Critical thinking can confront design. It is a way to observe what is going on, and a way to respond to design, from a different perspective.

2019 Yangtze River Delta Green Packaging and Environmental Sustainability Forum is held in China 3D Printing Culture Museum. Du Huanzheng, director of the Institute of Circular Economy of Tongji University and national expert on environmental science, gave a lecture on " Circulation Solution for Reduced Plastic Packaging ".

Du Huanzheng said: "Nowadays, young people are attracted by design and ideas; such as Coca-Cola, the drink has kept the same for more than 100 years, but the packaging has changed a lot, so as its concept. " He thinks China has changed from high-speed development to high-quality development. In the past, companies use manufacturing scale to solve problems, now instead, they rely on products, services and experience. China's development needs to change, in products quality, service, and experience. Experience requires design awareness and ideas.

From a design perspective, the entire change of the industrial manufacturing industry needs ecological design, green manufacturing, consumption saving, and recycling. Du Huanzhen said that, in the past when we produced a product, we did not consider how to recycle, so lower the cost as much as possible. Nowadays we must consider how to recycle it when designing a product, before it is produced.
